Understanding Typical Floor Editing in ArkDesign.AI: Capabilities, Limits, and Best Practices

Editing Wall Dimensions on the Typical Floor Screen in ArkDesign.AI

The Typical Floor screen in ArkDesign.AI is designed to establish the primary building shape that will repeat across multiple levels. To maintain structural consistency and ensure reliable system coordination, certain editing functions are intentionally limited at this stage.

What You Can and Cannot Edit

On the Typical Floor screen:

  • You cannot move walls directly.
  • You cannot split walls or perform major reconfigurations.

These restrictions ensure that the typical floor maintains a stable, repeatable structure that aligns with vertical circulation, structural grids, and multi-floor relationships.

Adjusting Wall Dimensions

While wall movement is restricted, ArkDesign.AI allows precise dimension control:

  1. Select a wall segment on the Typical Floor.
  2. Click on the dimension box to edit its values.
  3. Enter a new dimension to adjust the length of the wall.

This method gives users accuracy and control while preserving the system’s automated calculations for area, zoning, and floor efficiency.

Where to Make Full Layout Changes

For complete customization of the floor plan—including moving walls, splitting walls, or reshaping the building—you must use the Floor Editor:

  • The Floor Editor becomes available after the building is generated.
  • It provides full flexibility for:
    • Wall movement and reconfiguration
    • Core placement adjustments
    • Corridor layout changes
    • Custom enclosed area creation

This two-step workflow ensures that the core building massing is structurally sound before detailed design adjustments are made.

Why This Workflow Matters

Separating basic massing (Typical Floor) from detailed editing (Floor Editor) allows ArkDesign.AI to:

  • Maintain consistent geometry across repeated floors
  • Prevent conflicts with vertical cores and structural systems
  • Provide reliable area and zoning calculations
  • Support both automated and custom design workflows
